How often should you change your shower filter?

The body filter about every 2 to 4 weeks, the head filter about every 2 months. How to read those numbers and keep to them without thinking.

A SEASEE shower filter is two filters in one handheld shower: a sediment body filter inside the handle and a five-layer head filter behind the spray plate. Each one has its own rhythm, and keeping to it is most of what it takes for the shower to keep working the way it did on the first day.

The short answer

  • Body filter (sediment): about every 2 to 4 weeks.
  • Head filter (five layers): about every 2 months.

These are guides, not fixed dates. Timing varies with local water conditions and with how often the shower is used. A one-person studio and a busy family bathroom will not run on the same clock, so treat the ranges as a starting point and adjust to what you see.

A word on Singapore's water

Singapore's tap water is treated by PUB, the national water agency, and is safe to drink straight from the tap. A shower filter does not change that, and it is not a fix for unsafe water. It is a comfort choice. SEASEE filters are designed to help hold back sediment and reduce residual chlorine before the water reaches you, for people who prefer how that feels. A fresh filter keeps doing that job; one that has stayed in too long has less left to give.

Why the two filters run on different clocks

Two filters in one shower: the sediment body filter (centre) sits inside the handle, the five-layer head filter (right) behind the spray plate.

Water from the hose reaches the body filter first. It is a sediment filter, and it has the shorter interval, so it is the one you change most often. A box of sediment refills holds 3 filters, which the product page lists as about 3 months' supply.

The head filter is a disc 6.5 cm across and 2 cm thick that stacks five layers: a micro fabric filter, an activated carbon filter, a ceramic ball layer, a chlorine-reduction ball and a second micro fabric filter. It is changed about every 2 months and comes one to a pack. Around the 2-month mark both filters are often due in the same week, so many people simply change them together.

Signs it is time to change sooner

Change a filter before its guide date if:

  • it looks dark or discoloured when you open the handle or the shower head;
  • the water pressure drops noticeably;
  • you cannot remember when you last changed it, and it feels like longer than the guide.

Filter Change about every In a refill pack
Shower body (sediment) 2 to 4 weeks 3 filters
Shower head (five-layer) 2 months 1 filter
Vita C head refill 2 months 1 filter
Basin 1 to 2 months 3 filters
Jet bidet 1 to 3 months 5 filters
Travel shower About every 2 to 4 weeks 3 filters

Every interval varies with local water conditions. The refill filters collection lists each refill with the kits it fits.

How to change them

Turn off the water first.

Body filter. Twist the top part of the shower head handle to open it. Take out the used filter, insert the new sediment body filter, and twist the shower head back until it is tight.

Head filter. Twist open the top part of the shower head. Insert the new head filter with the black side facing the water outlet and the white side facing up. Check that the rubber ring is seated, then twist the shower head closed until it is tight. If the head leaks afterwards, check that the filter is the right way round and that its rubber ring has not shifted.

Making the rhythm automatic

Note the date

The simplest habit is to note the day you change a filter. If you have a SEASEE account, My refills lists your devices and when each filter is due. Press "I changed it today" after a swap, and the next due date moves on from there.

Let the Refill Plan bring the refills

On the Refill Plan, refills arrive at the rhythm you choose.

Single refills can be bought once or on the Refill Plan. You choose how often the refills arrive, every 6, 8, 12 or 16 weeks, and we suggest a rhythm from how long each refill lasts. Each refill on the plan costs 10% less than buying it once, and the price per delivery is shown before you check out.

How the reminder works

We email you 3 days before each Refill Plan order. That email is about the order, not the filter change, and it gives you time to decide. If there is still a spare in the cupboard, skip that delivery. If you are going away, pause the plan. Both are under Subscriptions in your account.

The plan renews at the rhythm you chose until you cancel it. There is no minimum number of deliveries and no cancellation fee. When the box arrives, treat it as your cue: change the filter, note the date, and put the spares somewhere dry.

The habit in one line

Body filter about every 2 to 4 weeks, head filter about every 2 months, sooner if it looks dark or the pressure drops. Write down the date, and let the reminder email do the remembering.
